Deepavali - Celebrating the Indian Festival of Lights

Serangoon Road is the lifeblood of Little India. Singapore celebrates Deepavali with this beautiful light-up along Serangoon Road. Little India

This small shopping complex used to be called Tekka Mall. Since upgrading its image, it has changed its name to The Verge. There is a Banquet Food Court on the 4th floor and an assortment of small shops selling clothing, handbags and fashion accessories.

Behind The Verge is Hastings Road and Clive Road - British names in Little India, something I had not realised before.

Little India in Serangoon Road

Deepavali this year falls on the 28th of October and the Indian community will be celebrating the Festival of Lights. Serangoon Road will be ablaze with festive lights. The street decorations are already up. Even without these, Little India will still shine with its colours and wares. It is not just the colours but the sounds and fragrance of the spices in the air that gives you a feeling that you could be in India. Singapore is a city that is truly unique because of we have so much variety in culture and heritage and yet they are all contained within the soul of one nation.

Cloud over Little India

Round the corner of these HDB flats is Serangoon Road. I was walking along the Rochore Canal towards Selegie Road when I looked up saw this cloud formation. I thought it interesting enough to stop and fish out my camera to capture this scene.

I decided not to take any more photos as I tend to take too many photos that do nothing except take up space in my pc. So for once I went along my way and at the end of the day, this is the one photo that had made my day.

Little India

Little India in Serangoon Road was where I met up with a friend. Places like these are so rich in character that shopping malls with their standard fares pale in comparison. The sights, the sounds, the smell are like nowhere else in Singapore because it is a miniature India.

This was not where I spent the day wandering. It was only a meeting place. As I was a little early I walked round a block of shop houses recording images spontaneously as they captured my interest. In all, I spent ten minutes in the area. There is much more to explore, perhaps another time when I shall make a special trip to just take photos of the uniques architecture and the street scenes.

Moving towards Selegie Road towards Bugis Junction. Had lunch of prawn noodles at $2 a bowl (small) in this shop reminiscent of old houses in Malaysia. Look at the extremely high ceiling and the windows.
Going home in the evening, I caught a fleeting glimpse of these colourful spiral staircase, doubled back and took a whole lot of photos.
